SUMMER JOBS

In observance of Mental Health Awareness Month, May’s “Did You Know” Segment will focus on mental health facts.
According to a survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control, more than one in three high school students (37.1%) experienced poor mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, 44.2% of students experienced persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness, almost 20% seriously considered suicide, and 9.0% attempted suicide during the 12 months before the survey.

1925-A high school science teacher, John T. Scopes was indicted for teaching the theory of evolution in his classes, as the Tennessee state law prohibits the teaching of evolution in public schools. The trial began on July 10th of that year. After eight minutes of deliberation, the jury returned with a guilty verdict, and the judge ordered Scopes to pay a fine of $100, the minimum the law allowed. It will famously be known as the “Scopes Monkey Trial”.

1977-George Lucas's space opera film Star Wars (later known as Star Wars: Episode IV—New Hope) was released, launching one of the most successful and influential franchises in motion picture history.
